Training Package Changes

The Australian Skills Quality Authority (ASQA) serves as the national regulator for vocational education and training (VET), with a primary objective of upholding the quality of education and training. As part of their mandate, ASQA regularly revises training packages, and recently, ASQA has updated the training package relevant to Swimming and Water Safety Teacher qualifications, aiming to ensure alignment with contemporary industry standards and regulatory requirements. This has resulted in the competency units for the following courses being updated:
• SWIM Australia™ Teacher
• SWIM Australia™ Teacher of Babies & Toddlers
• SWIM Australia™ Teacher of Learners with Disability

How does it affect me? I have a SWIM Australia™ Teacher qualification.

We want to reassure you that your current qualifications under SISSS00112 – Swimming and Water Safety Teacher (SWIM Australia™ Teacher) and/or SISCAQU011 – Promote development of infants and toddlers in an aquatic environment (SWIM Australia™ Teacher of Babies & Toddlers), and/or SISCAQU012 – Assist participants with a disability during aquatic activities (SWIM Australia™ Teacher of Learners with Disability) remain fully valid despite the recent release of the upgraded courses. Your expertise and certification in teaching swimming and water safety are recognised and unchanged.

SWIM Australia™ Course Old Superseded Course Code New Updated Course Code
SWIM Australia™ Teacher SISSS00112 – Swimming and Water Safety Teacher SISSS00132 – Swimming and Water Safety Teacher
SWIM Australia™ Teacher of Babies & Toddlers SISCAQU011 – Promote development of infants and toddlers in an aquatic environment SISCAQU027 – Promote development of infants and toddlers in an aquatic environment
SWIM Australia™ Teacher of Learners with Disability SISCAQU028 – Assist participants with disability during aquatic activities SISCAQU012 – Assist participants with a disability during aquatic activities

However, if you are considering extending your skills by undertaking additional courses such as SWIM Australia™ Teacher of Babies & Toddlers or SWIM Australia™ Teacher of Learners with Disability, there are prerequisites to be aware of. Specifically, you will need to hold the following units of competency: SISCAQU024 Teach Water Familiarisation, Buoyancy, and Mobility Skills, as well as SISCAQU025 Teach Water Safety and Survival Skills before you can enrol in these extension courses. Both these units form part of the updated SISSS00132 – Swimming and Water Safety Teacher course.

To facilitate this process, we are pleased to announce that gap training for these will soon be available. This training will cover the required units of competency, enabling you to meet the prerequisites for the extension courses.

What happens when my accreditation is due for renewal?

When it comes time for reaccreditation, you have the option to either reaccredit your current qualification or choose to update to the new units of competency under SISSS00132 – Swimming and Water Safety Teacher by completing gap training. More details on gap training will be provided soon. Stay tuned for updates.
