Swim Australia™ Teacher of Learners with Disability

Swim School

Swim Australia offer a suite of extension courses which enable the further development of teachers and creates the potential for members of our community with physical, social or cultural barriers to participate in lessons and programs promoting water safety and swimming skills.

The Swim Australia™ Teacher of Learners with Disability (SAT LWD) will be competent to deliver swimming lessons and services to students and learners with a diverse range of abilities.

All enrolled Swim Australia course students are covered by SCTI Insurance for the duration of their course and will receive complementary ASCTA Membership upon being accredited*

Units of Competency

This course covers the following units within the Certificate III of Aquatics and Recreation:

SISCAQU012

Assist participants with a disability during aquatic activities

 

Course structure

After completion of all online Units of Competency you will be provided with a Theory Acknowledgement.  You will then be welcome to attend the Practical Induction workshop of your course which focuses on transitioning you from theory to hands on practical.

The practical 5-hour face to face workshop includes:

  • Limitations and Capabilities
  • Biomechanics
  • Strokes Simulation and Adjustments
  • Programming

Once the Practical Induction is complete you will undertake On the Job training under the supervision and direction of a Lead Teacher. As your confidence and ability grows you will progressively become more involved in the lesson delivery and a Competency Assessment will then determine that you are at the required standard to work independently.

Students have up to 12 months to complete this course but may be accredited sooner should they have completed and submitted all course requirements.

  • Online Theory component – approx. 30 hrs
  • Face to Face Practical workshop – 5 hrs
  • On the job training – approx. 20 to 30 hrs
  • Competency Assessment – 1.5 hrs

Accreditation Requirements

Completion of:

  • Online Theory Component.
  • Practical Workshop Induction
  • On the Job Training (3 hours of Sideline Observation and approximately 20 hours of Shadow and Micro teaching)
  • Competency Assessment signed off by assessor
  • Accumulative Training Record
  • Accredited and Valid CPR qualification (HLTAID001, 002, 003, 004 or 007)
  • Current Working with Children Check
  • Unique Student Identifier (USI)

You may enrol in a Swim Australia™ Teacher course at 16 years of age but are not eligible to receive the accreditation until you are 17 years of age. 

Certification | Accreditation

An added benefit of this self-paced study course is that is constitutes ASCTA Professional Development and thus extends the expiration date of any existing Swim Australia™ Teacher accreditations you have for a further 4 years from the date of this course’s completion.

Students who have successfully completed this course will receive an updated electronic Swim Australia Teacher certificate which notes your completed SAT LWD qualification.
